Oral hygiene and how to clean a partial denture

A removable partial denture (RPD) is less invasive for patients with multiple missing teeth and has a lower cost than other dental replacement options. There is however, a break-in time required to get used to having an RPD. They can increase plaque build-up around the abutment teeth, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. Further, trauma to the abutment teeth or gums can occur from pressure or movement of the RPD. Bone loss at the sites of missing teeth can occur and, over time, can affect adjacent teeth. The loss of an abutment tooth may require a new RPD. It is therefore essential to look after the RPD, careful cleaning is vital.

Daily Denture Cleaning

You need to clean a partial denture every day. It’s essential to remove plaque and prevent staining of the teeth. It’s best to use a brush created for this purpose; however, you can achieve good results by using a regular toothbrush.  You can use several cleaning agents such as hand soap or mild dish soap to clean a partial denture. Please bear in mind that many kinds of toothpaste are too abrasive and can damage the appliance.

Rinse the partial denture thoroughly to loosen food particles. Brush the surfaces carefully, avoiding damage to the plate.  Once you have also cleaned your natural teeth, you are ready to fit your partial denture again.

Overnight Denture Cleaning

Take your partial out every night to relieve your teeth and tissues. Your gums need air and good blood circulation to be healthy. Caring for your partial denture requires more than just cleaning. A denture could lose its proper shape if it is not kept moist. Therefore, it should be placed in warm water or a specialist soaking solution overnight; this helps keep it clean.

Overall taking care of a partial denture requires a little time and effort to keep it in shape.  It is well worth it if you want to avoid gum disease and mouth sores.
